Ted Haggard faces more gay sex accusations

Revelation comes ahead of HBO documentary

1-25-09

Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard’s former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard - a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.

Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.

Boyd said an “overwhelming pool of evidence” pointed to an “inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship” that “went on for a long period of time … it wasn’t a one-time act.” Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began.
Reached Friday night, Haggard declined to comment and said all interviews would have to be arranged through a publicist for HBO, which is airing a documentary about him this month.

Apparently the church paid off this volunteer, but he's still talking. Haggard's attempt to make people believe he is "healed" isn't working too well, is it?

I just finished watching the HBO piece about Ted. Seems Ted isn't claiming he is a heterosexual or completely "gay". He's sorta stuck in-between not having decided what to call himself. Maybe he'll decide he's bi-sexual? His church he founded has allowed him to move back into his home in Colorado. He's selling insurance on a commission basis and dearly misses all the free money that sustained his lavish lifestyle for many years. He wrote his evangelical friends and requested money. How much the 15 or so friends sent to him was not disclosed, but I can't imagine Ted being empty-handed, especially with the church funds alloted him on his being cast out from his ministry position. Ted has discovered just how difficult it is for a high school grad to find a decent good paying job. All he has is a high school diploma and remarked that his bible degree did nothing for him in the secular world. A degree in the supernatural doesn't quite fit into high technologies these days. Ted has evidently discovered the real world and he doesn't like it. He said he didn't want his family to be poor. Tuff shit. I think he could get used to it as millions of others in the United States of America are forced to do so.

Having been forced out of his million-dollar "racket", as I call it, Ted has received much good advice. "Get a job" has been the most often given advice to his whinning about money. As he's spending more in time and money in his new role as commissioned insurance salesman,(no sale=no pay), and he thought it would be a piece of cake because he had experience in "motivating" people, Ted has learned that his salesmanship isn't particularly profitable for him. So, Ted should probably look for a new job, one that pays an hourly wage at minimum.

Ted has preached the duty of the church overseer's for years in their capacity of forgiving sins but now he is blaming them for not forgiving him, as he sees it. But their forgiveness is not the point, for they have forgiven him. The point of concern is of his leadership as at the center of focus, and according to Ted's inability to decide on his sexual preferences, he can no longer be entrusted to lead others. It's simply a matter of keeping "evil" out of the body of Christ. I think Ted realizes this but is still having a problem with rejection.

All in all the HBO piece did a good documentary with this hidden problem of homosexuality in Ted, and hinting at within the churches and probably which many men in the churches are confronted with within themselves. They fight a battle in turmoil, fearing the outcome should they be openly honest with not only their fellow Christians but with their immediate family. Ted's family of wife and two sons is sticking by him, and he's a lucky man in that regard, maybe. I see Ted as having the ability to do good things outside the church but destroying the church's principles in Christ should he be allowed to return. Religion does have it's principles to uphold within its churches.

Thanks for the review, Roselyn, we don't have HBO so I didn't see it. I heard Ted has bought a $300,000 house since leaving the church. He must be a helluva good insurance agent.

His church gave him back his original house is my understanding. And instead of remaining an independent commissioned insurance salesperson, he and his wife have started their own insurance business, probably financially backed by his church. He said he was a good motivator and discovered that he wasn't a good salesperson as he spent more money than he was making selling policies. But now he can motivate others to sell his business for him. He'll probably succeed as long as other people's money is guaranteeing his success. I wonder how he started, tied into an existing insurance company or did he start out flat with church financial backing? Seems like it would be a difficult process to start out flat without some sort of guarantee in policy arrangements. How much do you know about the insurance business Mickey? Can anyone start out broke as Ted says he is or need lots of financial guarantee?
