For Edwards, investigation is latest stage of saga
May 3, 2009

RALEIGH, N.C. – His once-prominent political career is buried and the turmoil of his marriage is playing out in public. Now, John Edwards is facing a federal inquiry.

The two-time Democratic presidential candidate acknowledged Sunday that investigators are assessing how he spent his campaign funds — a subject that could carry his extramarital affair from the tabloids to the courtroom. Edwards' political action committee paid more than $100,000 for video production to the firm of the woman with whom Edwards had an affair.

The former North Carolina senator said in a carefully worded statement that he is cooperating.

"I am confident that no funds from my campaign were used improperly," Edwards said in the statement. "However, I know that it is the role of government to ensure that this is true. We have made available to the United States both the people and the information necessary to help them get the issue resolved efficiently and in a timely matter."

While Edwards focused his comment on campaign funds, he also had a range of other fundraising organizations — including two nonprofits and a poverty center at his alma mater — that have come under scrutiny.

Chief among them was the PAC that paid Rielle Hunter's company for several months in 2006 for Web videos that documented Edwards' travels and advocacy in the months leading up to his 2008 presidential campaign. The committee also paid her firm an additional $14,086.50 on April 1, 2007.

Edwards acknowledged the affair with Hunter last year, months after dropping his presidential bid.

At the time of the 2007 payment, the PAC only had $7,932.95 in cash on hand, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission. That day, according to the records, Edwards' presidential campaign paid the PAC $14,034.61 for what is listed as a "furniture purchase."

Willfully converting money from a political action committee for personal use is a federal crime.

For someone who once had such a bright future, Edwards has certainly managed to screw up every area of his life. It's too bad.

It's sad that Edwards lost his head over a piece of tail but he's no more guilty than the war criminals in the Bush administration whose acts of treason against American citizens has been exposed in written memo's, not to mention the torture of their sadism being swept under the rug. Or the Repugnut whore house exposed as a brothel with public bathroom facilities at the ready.

I think the Edwards family will survive and be better people for it.

And who always pops up to defend conservatives, Republicans, right-wingers, Christians or Zionists?

Ah, I bet you say that about everyone who disagrees with you. (Just like when you were a Christian.)

Did anyone see Elizabeth Edwards on Oprah? She didn't really say anything that wasn't already known through the media.

She wouldn't name John's trick. Probably doesn't want to give her publicity.

Elizabeth has written a book on the scandal. Are people tired of hearing the story played over and over and over? Reminds me of that ad with the Energizer Bunny, it just keeps going and going and going...

Is John the father of the child? Liz says she doesn't know, and "its" not her problem. What about a DNA test, have John and Elizabeth gotten that far yet? Why would John not want to know if the kid was his or not? Is Liz suffering from denial?

Liz has terminal cancer. I think she's concentrating on putting her own children first.

Elizabeth has made all the talk show rounds in promotion of her book and whinning about her husbands trisk with the other woman. If I could tell her anything it would be to say enough already; either leave John or forgive him and let the hatred go. If she believes in the vows of better or worse, and what she has seen is the worse, that's part of the marriage package. It's up to her, she's carrying the ball and can throw it any which way she pleases.

When it comes to her own honesty, it's sorely lacking. She chose to deceive her and John's supporters and not disclose his spending campaign funds on a whore. Her integrity is zero. Her holy shit stinks. And.. the world will go on without her being first lady.
