I came across this interesting article about the origins of Yahweh.
The article is found at: http://www.bibleorigins.net/YahwehYawUgarit.html

His argument is that Yahweh is a conflation of several near eastern gods. These being Ea/Enki, Yam/Yaw, Bull El and Ba'al Hadad plus some minor influences from gods like Enlil.

It is a very good article if you are inclined to read it.

His argument sounds reasonable to me, as much as I read that is. I'll have to go back and finish later. But consider all those gods and all those sacrifices. Untold human genocides. I think the most difficult of things to let go for the YahWeh crowd were the sacrifices. Blood played such an important role in the Hebrew appeasement worship practice.

In the bible is mentioned that Yahweh refuses offerings with spots and blemishes. A defective child would have been disgarded as not perfect enough for him. Or a sickly child or animal. And where did the Hebrews get the idea of offering their firstborn? And were the Jewish people the last people to discard bloody animal sacrifices?

Samaritans still practice animal sacrifice. I would not trust that human sacrifice isn't included on occassion, if they think human blood is more valuable in appeasement to their god.

And the history or discovery channel did a documentary on native people in the wilds of Brazil or South America somewhere, and these tribesmen were still shrinking the heads of their enemies, eating the brains of their dead relatives and this causing them to have some kind of diabilatating disease and eventually death.

Aren't you glad that you live in civilized America where some people are still choking chickens, cutting their throats and draining their blood in their pagan rituals of worship?

As the blood of bulls was such an important element of their worship practices, I think they should have just called their god BullShit. Secretly, many of them did, I think.
