Found this on the Houston Chronicle:

Quote:
God's Purposes in a Recession

3/12/2009

I often find comfort and encouragement from my favorite author (outside of those who wrote the Bible of course), John Piper. His most recent blog entitled What Is the Recession For? is exceptional. In this blog, he lists five purposes the God has in a recession for individuals and ultimately for the nation:

1. He intends for this recession to expose hidden sin and so bring us to repentance and cleansing.

2. He intends to wake us up to the constant and desperate condition of the developing world where there is always and only recession of the worst kind.

3. He intends to relocate the roots of our joy in his grace rather than in our goods, in his mercy rather than our money, in his worth rather than our wealth.

4. He intends to advance his saving mission in the world—the spread of the gospel and the growth of his church—precisely at a time when human resources are least able to support it. This is how he guards his glory.

5. He intends for the church to care for its hurting members and to grow in the gift of love.

I really like the purposes he lists. For those of you who believe in God, why do you think that He allows recessions? For those of you who do not believe in God, what do you think we can learn from recessions?

I think this recession belongs to the Bush Administration, not to God. What do you think of this article?

Another desperate attempt by Bush to avoid blame for his incompetence.

Sure.....blame God.

Just like God told him to invade Iraq.

If only God would have told Barbara to have an abortion.

Recessions are due to overextending ourselves by spending beyond our means, and when product prices rise above their inherent use value.

At this time, the pendulum begins to swing away from the acquisition of wealth as we recognize:
1.) How deeply indebted we have become;
2.) How to live within our means; and,
3.) That there are more aspects to living than filling up our lives with things that are designed to be used up, break down, or be obsolete within a few months.
(Ever notice that the things which are used up the fastest often cost the most?)

As far as the article goes, and although I'm a little wary of folks who talk about God's Intentions with absolute certitude, I find the list above to be very possible, especially if it is viewed from the standpoint of selflessness versus selfishness. In addition, such statements may also help folks to overcome the gloom, doom, fear and despair they find themselves in as a result of what has occurred.

On the other hand, and speaking from a strictly cynical standpoint, such statements could be viewed as a means to keep the masses smiling and full of hope even while they're being robbed of all they have: To make them feel good as they get impaled by the greaseless shaft of avarice and greed.

doc ;)

God doesn't have INTENTS.

If God did have intents, whatever God INTENDED would be DONE.

However, God only has hopes.

God hopes mankind soon (in the next million or two million years) grows up.

Luckily, God is patient.

It seems human minds are always trying to find reasons for this that or the other.

Set sail on the Sea of Simple Wonder and enjoy the trip.

Regarding this recession: Since it bit in U.K I have given away 125 percent of my weekly income. I'm not a penny in debt and it (the recession) is, to the hermit, something read about online or in newspapers - it has no reality in Hermitworld.

Psalms 66 says,"You have caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but you brought us out into a wealthy place.Recession shouldnt be a true believers concern IF you walk in obedience. I believe that God has a wealthy place for us.
God will provide!
God has a good plan for our life, not an evil one.
Jer.29:11
If people allow recession to get in their heart andin their mouth, they will have recession. The world can have recession all they want. Watch Cnn, Fox, ect, you think your putting news in you??
Your putting recession in you.Thats all they talk about.Bad things happening. AM I denying bad things happening? No, there's bad things happening, but people are living in a fallen world, but I on the other hand am a believer, and called on this world by God, and I am not to be recessioned minded.
So I need to go to the Scriptures and see what God's word says about recession.
It surely doesnt have this to say.Your going to have recession in 2009, and might get out of it by 2010.
Might even have a full recovery by 2011.In the mean time, we're going to hand out a bunch of money to people, that no matter what, will still be in poverty because they dont kn ow what the bible says, but we're going to try to get you out of recession.
You think handing people money, who dont know what to do with it in the first place is going to help get people out of a recession? No it won't. Im not against our goverment, but handing people money that dont do the right thing with money dont get them out of recession.
Proverbs says put money in the hands of a fool and they will lose it.
I can go on and on about this subject but i wont for now.
Did you know theres actually 3 great recessions in scripture????
Maybe I will do a teaching on them :)

I'm so glad that you are optimistic Bella. I'm so tired of hearing the Repugnuts accuse our savior Obama. If they could, they'd crucify him or rip him apart with their bare hands. Gotta keep a close eye on those Repugnuts ya know. They don't have any answers to any problems, all they know how to do is pump up the ignorant for pre-emptive wars.

Have you noticed the Right Wing preaching their prosperity doctrine more strongly? I would imagine their money flow is running kinda slim these days and some might lose their luxury lifestyle and even declare bankruptcy. Maybe God is about to punish them more, do you think? Especially since they are conspiring against his anointed one Obama. :)
